For the week ending May 11, 2008

Tidal Potomac River

There was a fish kill last week in Quantico Creek I have an update to that situation. First hand accounts from Chris Waller who lives on the creek said there were about 1000 fish that were killed. DEQ came out conducted some water samples and found the water to be in the acceptable range. They were unable to identify the source of the pollution and there was no ongoing fish kill. They also observed healthy fish swimming in the water while they were there. Most of the dead fish were Gizzard Shad, but there also were Gar, Catfish, as well as Largemouth Bass. It also appears to have only affected the bay in the back of the creek where the pads grow. Lets all keep an eye out when in this area. I personally don't think this is going to have a big impact on the bass fishing in Q-Creek but like I say lets keep an eye out.

Lake Anna

With the weather the way it has been this the lake will be the only game in town for most of the coming week. With the major spawn already done bass fishing has been experiencing first stage post-spawn which sets up some pretty slow fishing. We however managed to scrape some fish together this week but I didn't get them where I normally like to fish during this time. I usually fare very well up-lake during this time but I had to pull back to mid-lake to get bit. The bass at mid-lake are holding in about 6 to 8-foot of water on points, drops, and docks. Put a shaky-head rig in your hands and don't put it down. I'm using a 1/4-oz Bagley's head with a 4.75 green-pumpkin YUM Houdini worm. Good places are Sturgeon Creek, just inside Contrary Creek, and small coves around the splits.

Rappahannock River

No report this week.

Other Places

I got down to Buggs again and got my first topwater action. Bass are moving to rocks rip-rap in particular in wait of the shad spawn. There is no shortage of this cover on the lake. I was working up around Clarkesville but that will be out of play this week because of all the rain but down-lake has plenty as well around Palmers Point and North Bend. Start the morning with Rebel pop-R's and then switch to a blue glimmer Booyah HD spinnerbait or a Bomber fat-free shad (as the sun climbs) in a citrus or pearl shad color pattern. I would use the 3/8-oz model that dives 8 to 10 feet. Topwater here is getting ready to explode.

Sponsor of the week: Smith Optics

I told client Mike Maglich that I was going to use him as an example this week in my fishing report. Mike and his wife Carrie got to do some sight fishing with me this week. As Mike worked his lure per my instruction; I would make the play by play commentary seeking Mikes acknowledgment, "lookout she's flexing her jaws, damn she just bump it, dude look out she's head down tail up. He looked at me and said I can't see a thing. The reason he had a cheap pair of optics hanging on his nose and I had my Smith Mavericks on mine. Optics are one of the most taken for granted products that fisherman purchase. Do yourself a favor don't go cheap go all the way go Smith Optics. Now we won't talk about Mike's hook-set.
